SAVANNA – Julian Ortiz of Savanna, and member of West Carroll High School FFA, was selected as the State FFA proficiency winner in vegetable production.
Earlier in the year, he was named chapter, section and district winner for the area.
Ortiz works at Neumiller Farms in Savanna.
FFA recognizes students in 50 areas based on their work-based learning, known as Supervised Agricultural Experiences. Members who demonstrate outstanding agricultural skills and competencies through record keeping, leadership, and scholastic achievement may be considered for this award.
SAEs allow students to learn by doing by either owning and operating an agricultural business, working or serving an internship at an agriculture-based business or conducting an agriculture-based scientific experiment and reporting results.
He will receive plaques for his accomplishment. Julian is the son of Ana Barragan and Jose Ortiz from Savanna. He will compete is in the National FFA Awards selection process in July.
