Forreston FFA gives Sterling hospital staff gifts

Students worked to prepare plants

CGH Medical Center in Sterling handed out staff appreciation gifts last week with the help of Forreston Junior Senior High School Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor Kelley Parks.

CGH approached Parks and the Forreston FFA last year to start the planning for its spring time gift.

Parks ordered the 3,400 plants for CGH this summer when she ordered her normal greenhouse order.

The plants arrived in Forreston in early February and the students went to work. During class time the plant science and horticulture classes learned how to transplant, water, pinch and care for the plants while also filling the needs of their customer.

“I cannot thank CGH enough for choosing a small FFA program to order their staff appreciation gifts through,” Parks said. “Not only will they be thanking their staff in a beautiful way but they also gave these students a chance to learn something along the way.”

The unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic put Forreston FFA and CGH in a tough spot, but both agreed that the medical staff especially needed to be thanked for all they are doing.

A drive-through flower pick up was set up. Dylan Lewis is the Forreston student in charge of the greenhouse under Parks.

“We had to keep the plants a little longer than expected due to our world condition,” Lewis said. “But we made it work in our greenhouse because we knew these workers really needed our thanks.”
