A Stockton man has been charged in the death of an Illinois State Trooper last month on U.S. 20 north of Freeport.

Craig Dittmar, 55, the driver of the semi tractor-trailer that struck and killed Brooke Story-Jones on March 28, has been charged with two counts of reckless homicide and one count of operating a commercial motor vehicle while fatigued.

The charges, all felonies, were filed by the Stephenson County State’s Attorney on April 11.

Dittmar’s bond was originally set at $250,000, but was reduced to $100,000 during a court appearance April 12..

Jones-Story, 34, also of Stockton, was killed on westbound U.S. 20 just west of Illinois 75 while she was inspecting another semi tractor-trailer on the side of the road.

She was outside of her squad car when she was struck and fatally injured by the semi tractor-trailer Dittmar was driving. It also struck her squad car and the semi she was inspecting.

Both trucks caught fire after the crash.

Jones-Story, 34, was the wife of former Mt. Morris police officer Robert Story Jr., who is a retired master sergeant with the Illinois State Police.

She was a 12-year veteran of the ISP District 16, headquartered in Pecatonica and serving Boone, Jo Daviess, Stephenson, and Winnebago Counties.
