A trio of local runners fared well at the Class 1A state cross country meet on Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
West Carroll junior Briar Nevills made a big splash in his state meet debut by taking home the 20th-place medal. He crossed the finish line in 15:24.
“I was not expecting top 20,” Nevills said. “It’s my first time to state, first time running this course – this just surprised me.”
Eastland-Milledgeville’s Stephen Reifsteck placed 98th in 16:25, and Morrison’s Koby Brackemeyer was 146th in 17:00.
Brackemeyer, a standout on Morrison track team relays, has been battling back issues all season, and competed with a slipped lumbar disc.
“For not running all season and having 1 week of practice going into regionals, it was just a miracle making it here,” Brackemeyer said. “That was my main goal, and I did it.”
Rock Falls senior Dawson Smith placed second in the race, running a PR in 14:44. Herscher’s Drew Rogers won the individual state title with a time of 14:30.
