Red Flag Law discussion Oct. 22 in Freeport

FREEPORT – League of Women Voters of Freeport will hold a free program on Illinois' Red Flag Law, or the Firearms Restraining Order, at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Freeport Public Library, 100 E. Douglas St.

The law went into effect on Jan. 1, and allows family, household members, and local law enforcement to petition for a court order to temporary remove firearms from any people exhibiting behavior that could lead to danger for themselves or others.

Presenters are Peter Cantos from the Illinois Coalition Against Handgun Violence, and Sara Knizhnik with the Illinois Gun Violence Prevention Coalition. A question and answer period will follow their presentation, with Freeport Police Lt. Andrew Schroeder, Stephenson County Sheriff's Department Investigator Alegra Koser, Stephenson County State's Attorney Carl Larson, and a representative from the VOICES of Stephenson County domestic violence program.
