SAVANNA – Classrooms at West Carroll Primary School tested positive for high mold counts after recent wet and warm weather.
Staff at the school, 2215 Wacker Road, brought in All-American Cleaning and Restoration on Sept. 23 to test air quality and set up humidifiers to remove excess moisture. Tests revealed elevated mold spore counts in two kindergarten rooms and one Early Steps/Right Steps preschool room, as compared to the outside, Superintendent Julie Katzenberger said.
All-American cleaned the three rooms on Oct. 9 and 10. Kindergarten and Right Steps preschool staff and students attended school Oct. 9, but preschool students got a day off on Oct. 10 because of the heavy cleaning.
The three rooms were retested on Oct. 11, and mold levels were no longer elevated. Students were encouraged to bring a change of shoes for recess, to avoid tracking molds inside.
Katzenberger said two of the three classrooms have air conditioning, but one does not. The two that have air conditioning usually have it shut off during the weekend, but the air conditioning was left on recently to help fight the mold.
With the recent cold snap and less likelihood of mold growing, the air conditioning will now remain off on the weekends, Katzenberger said.
