Two hurt Sunday in ATV vs train crash

MOUNT CARROLL – Two people riding the rails on ATVs were injured Sunday after jumping off their machines to avoid being hit by a train.

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train struck the two eastbound ATVs near the intersection of Daggert and Salem roads, about 2.5 miles southeast of Mount Carroll, around 8:30 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff's department said in a news release.

The drivers didn't hear the train behind them, and jumped just before it struck, the release said.

A boy was flown to a Rockford hospital, where he remained Monday. His condition was not available.

The other driver, Wade M. Lindstrom, 41, of Thomson, was found several hours later and taken to CGH Medical Center in Sterling for non-life-threatening injuries.

No one on the train, which was hauling 97 empty cars, was hurt and the tracks were closed only for a short time, BSNF Regional Public Affairs Director Andy Williams said.

The two may face misdemeanor trespassing charges and a $1,500 fine, Williams said.

A call to Carroll County Sheriff Jeff Doran was not returned Monday afternoon.
