FREEPORT – John A. Peterson, 100, of Freeport, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
He was born March 10, 1917, at the farm home in Cherry Grove Township to the Martin and Anna (Gast) Peterson. John married Vera Toepfer on Sept. 28, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa. John was a lifetime member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ. He was a third-generation farmer in the Pearl City area, and after he retired from farming, he worked as a carpenter and a maintenance man at Lake Carroll. John enjoyed playing cards, woodworking and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Vera; his sons, Randall (Joyce), Richard (Janet), Ryan (Debbie), Reginald (Linda), and Rodney (Nancy); his daughters, Ramona Cruse and Rita (Randy) Brinkmeier; his 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and son-in-law, Jerry Cruse.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hermann Funeral Home in Pearl City. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Pearl City. Interment will be at Ebenezer Cemetery at the church.
A memorial fund has been established for Ebenezer Cemetery.
