Essay contest now open from Highland College

FREEPORT – Applications can be submitted until April 26 for Highland Community College’s Jane Adams Essay contest.

The competition is open to Highland students and high school students attending a school in Stephenson County.

A total of two awards will be given to winning writers, with $250 for high school students and $350 for college students. Teachers also will be recognized for having students take part in the contest.

Jane Addams was born in 1860 in Cedarville. She established Hull House in 1889 in the near west side of Chicago, to give poor, working-class immigrants social and educational opportunities. Addams won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931, and died in 1935.
